10 Do's and Don'ts
1. Eat the local raspberries! Serbia produces 30% of raspberries worldwide
2. Drink the local coffee, it's a staple for the Serbian lifestyle
3. Enjoy watching football. Along with drinking immense amounts of coffee, Serbians also enjoy their football (American soccer)
4. Make sure to visit the famous Orthodox church, Saint Sava, in Belgrade. It is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the entire world
5. Make sure to not save your shopping for Sunday. Most grocery shops and cafes are closed, or close early compared to weekdays
6. When celebrate Krsna Slava, the Serbian Orthodox holiday commemorating each family's patron saint, do not eat meat or dairy products. These items are forbidden to eat at this celebration.
7. When greeting, remember 3 kisses on the cheek are a common introduction
8. If invited as a guest to someone's house, bring a small gift such as wine, flowers or food. This shows respect for the house owner
9. It is common to remove shoes in the house and use house slippers when walking around
10. Don't be alarmed on Christmas morning, when a young person knocks on the door and pokes the fire with a poking stick. This is supposed to welcome Christmas into the house. The amount of sparks from the fire indicate how much luck the family will have in the following year.
